6 Ways to Improve Your Employee Health Strategy

Health Strategy

When you help your employees to remain healthy, your business will benefit from their health. Not only does this mean lower direct costs on insurance and worker compensations general liability , but it also means more revenue due to higher productivity as fewer workers will be away from work due to illness. According to the CDC, conditions like high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and smoking cost employees in the US as much as $36.4 billion between 2016 to 2017.

While studies suggest that many companies now have a workplace health strategy in place to help promote workers’ health, there is still a lot of work to be done. If you already have a workplace health program in your company, here are some of the ways you can improve it and get better results both in the long and short term.

1. Make Your Workplace Comfortable

One of the key ways to improve your employee health strategy is to create a physically comfortable and healthy work environment. It begins with the use of furniture that makes your workers as comfortable as possible, good lighting, air conditioning, and other factors that contribute to a comfortable workplace. Creating such a comfortable workplace and striving to maintain is a clear indicator that your company is dedicated to a lasting health care strategy.

2. Regulate Drug Use

Some organizations already ban the use of unprescribed recreational drugs for their workers. But this is not the case in many companies. In fact, in many corporate offices, there have been rising cases of drug use to enhance performance and to cope with stressful health conditions, especially in cases where there is no outright ban on it by the organization. Not banning drug use will not only affect the addicted staff member, but it can also influence other members of your staff. Scheduling drug tests will also help keep workers in check.

Although some workers may resort to the use of certo detox, as seen here, regular drug tests will help to raise their consciousness and discourage drug use entirely. Your HR department may also provide help and support for members of staff that are already addicted.

3. Organize Health Checkups

Most people rarely go for health checkups to monitor their state of health. Health checkups are vital to the early discovery of medical conditions and increase the chances of successful treatment. Early detection of diseases will aid treatment and reduce how much time your worker will have to spend away from work.

One of the ways you can help your workers maintain their health is by scheduling comprehensive health checkups for them maybe once or twice in a month. In addition to checkups, you may also invite professionals to advise them on ways to maintain good health and provide suggestions on the right steps for people with certain health discussion.

You should also create or promote health-related activities like softball games, picnics, friendly competition, mini-marathons, and other activities that will keep your workers active and keep them health conscious.

4. Provide Physical & Mental Space for Breaks

While offices are strictly for work, you don’t have to shackle people to work perpetually. You can aid the health and productivity of your workers by infusing rest into their work. If your workers would spend up to 8 hours at work at a time, you can help them get away from the nerve-wracking stress by allowing them some time away from work.

Leave substantial room for breaks in between work to give them time to rest. You can even take things a step further by creating a physical place where workers can take a break from work and get away from stress.

5. Encourage Preventive Care

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the things business owners and managers have had to learn is how to maintain a healthy work environment. The CDC says that up to 30% of Chronic and Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases and asthma in adults can be attributed to workplace exposure. This goes to show the importance of maintaining a healthy work environment.

Regular cleaning, fumigation, and disinfection should be included as part of an essential health care strategy for your workers. Encourage your employees also to take charge of their personal spaces and take precautions to protect themselves at all times.

6. Create Incentives for Health

Creating health programs with an incentive such as financial rewards and other prices is one of the simple ways you can encourage your workers to stay healthy. You can take things a step further by offering rewards for workers that can hit a health goal like lowering their blood pressure or hit a healthy BMI.

You can also create incentive programs for specific groups of workers such as prices for women to take mammograms, men above 50 who take a prostate test or set health targets for employees with diabetes, and so on.

Conclusion

Always keep in mind that your employees are the backbone of your company. If they fall sick, their productivity will be affected, and so will the performance of your business. Therefore, you should take note of these tips and take steps that will promote a healthier workforce.
