So its’ obvious that everyone is using Google Drive for uploading your files in cloud to save it for future use or just to share with your friends. But sometime Google Drive acts strangely and give Can’t Download from Google Drive error. As from the google forum this error is faced by many users. You can see the reports here.
You are reading this article means you are also facing similar issue of not being able to download from Google Drive. But don’t worry we are here to fix the issue. We will provide you different method to solve the issue.
Why I Can’t Download from Google Drive?
Before moving into the solution, it is better to know the reason why you can’t download from google drive. The most common error that users see while downloading from Google Drive are Access Denied, Failed, Forbidden and sometimes clicking on download button does nothing. The reasons for them are your network connection issue or permission for download. Some other reasons are as below:
- Problem with internet connection
- You are downloading it in wrong way
- You have access problem to files
- There is problem with the cookies

Now that you know the reasons why you are seeing you can’t download from Google Drive problem. Let’s move into the solutions.
Before moving towards the solution I would like to mention different ways to download files from Google Drive, to make sure that you tried every possible ways. For most of the user just changing the way they tried to download the video worked. So, we will say it as our first solution for can’t download from Google Drive problem.
Solution 1: Correct way of downloading
As mentioned above most users don’t know the different methods for downloading the files from google drive so they don’t know the alternative method when one methods failed. So, we will mention the different ways to download files from google drive.
The first method to download from google drive is to Right click on the files that you want to download and select the Download button. Using this you can download multiple file as well. To select the multiple file press Shift in your keyboard and select all of the files that you want to download from google.
You can also download the files by clicking the three dot option at the top right side of the google drive. Like we mentioned in the above screenshot you can download multiple file by doing multiple selection with Shift Button.
For this method open the photo or video that you wanted to download. In the top Left Section you will see the Download button, by clicking this you can download the photo or video in your pc.
These are the methods to download files / video from google drive when you are logged on to your Google Drive account. But if you are not logged on to your account then follow the method mentioned below.

To download the files from Google Drive using this method open the publicly available link for google drive. And select the files that you wanted to download. When you select the file you will see the “Download” button to the left side. (if you are using the list view).
If you are viewing the files in grid view then the download button is in different location than mentioned in the above screenshot. Just hover above the files that you wanted to download and you will see an download icon, You can see that in screenshot below.
If you want to download all the files present the the current folder you can do so by clicking on the “Download All” button at the right top side of the screen.
Now that you know the proper method of download files from Google Drive. You should try all of the methods mentioned above to solve can’t download from google drive error. If you are still unable to download from google drive then you should probably move to solution number two below.
Solution 2: Restart your computer
Restart, restart, restart your computer. This should be the first troubleshoot step you should follow when you face any problem in your computer. We mentioned this in all of our articles about how to solve any problems, like that it is here in “Can’t Download from Google Drive” problem as well. It may sound dumb but most of the times just a simple restart solves lots of problem. If you are here without restarting the computer then you should probably restart it and come back if it still doesn’t fix the problem.
Solution 3: Clear Chrome/Firefox Cache
Now that you have restarted and tried to download the files from Google Drive and was still unable to download it, you should clear your internet cache. You are probably using Chrome or Firefox as your browser so clear its cache. As Chrome is one the most famous browser used we will cover how to clear internet cache in Chrome. The method to clear cache in other browser is also similar.
When you surf the internet the browsers stores cache files so that it can decrease the load time of the website when you visit it for second time. This is smart thing that browser does to save our time but if there browsers stores lots of cache files then it starts to acts strangely and causes different problem.
Follow the steps mentioned below to clear the cache from Chrome.
- Open your browser and click on the three dot which you can see at the top left corner.
- Then go to settings.
- Alternately you can open the Chrome settings by going to chrome://settings page.
- When you are in Chrome setting page, click the “Privacy and Security” option which you can see at the left side of screen.
- Once you are in “Privacy and Security” setting click on the ‘Clear browsing data‘ option located there.
- Once you have clicked it, you will see an popup like below which gives you option to clear cache, history from your Chrome. Select the “Cached images and files” and “Cookies and other site date“. In the Time Range you can select from different time range but we suggest you change it to “All time” and clear all of the internet cache.
Once you have cleared all of the internet cache you should be able to download files from Google Drive easily. If you are still facing the problem then move towards the next solution.
Solution 4: Checking the internet connection
If you are running on slow internet speed then you can face the problem where you can’t download from google drive. So, its’ better to check the internet connection either it is good or not. If your internet connection is not good then you can try downloading files from google drive when the connection is back to normal.
You may be wondering how can we check the internet connection. To check the internet connection there are different websites you can check your internet speed. We suggest you to use SpeedTest.net.
Once you are on website hit “GO” and let it complete its speed test. Once it complete its test you can see the screen like below.
If your internet speed is slow you can try downloading later. If your connection is all great but you are connected via VPN then you can disconnect from VPN and try again.
If you haven’t used VPN then you can try connecting to VPN and try to download. If doing this still doesn’t allow you to download then move to the next solution.
Solution 5: Check for download permission
If you are download files from the link shared by someone then make sure they have enabled the download permission to the files. If you are sharing the files to someone else then make sure you have enabled the download permission. So that they won’t end up facing can’t download from google drive problem. If you don’t know how to enable the permission then follow the article.
- Right click on the file that you wanted to share and click on “Share button”
- Once you click on share button you will see a pop up. In that popup change the “Get Link” to “Anyone” and click on small gear icon on the top right side of the popup.
- In the setting make sure you have checked “Viewers and commenters can see the option to download, print, and copy” yo make sure you have given download permission to users.
That’s it you can ask the person that shared the file with you to enable the permission if they haven’t done this. This is enabled default by google but sometimes someone may remove it.
If they have enabled this as well and you are still unable to download from google drive move on to another solution.
Solution 6: Allow the Google Drive Cookie
For most of the users who are facing this you can’t download from google drive error, the cookie for google drive is blocked You have to enable the cookie in order to download from google drive without any issue.
Follow the steps below to unblock the google drive cookie
- Click on the padlock just left to the google drive url.
- Then click on Cookies. You will see the list of “Allowed” and “Blocked” cookies. Click on the Blocked tab.
- If you there is any cookies in blocked section. Simply select the cookies and click on “Allow“
Thats it you have enabled the cookie for your google drive and now you must be able to download files from google drive easily. If this also doesn’t fix the problem then the last option left with us is to download via incognito mode.
Solution 7: Use incognito mode
This is not the solution but alternative if you face the problem. You can open the incognito mode and enter the link that you wanted to download and download it via any of the method we mentioned above to download.
To open the incognito mode in windows enter the shortcut key below:
Press Ctrl + Shift + n (For Chrome)
Press Ctrl + Shift + P (For Firefox)
To open the incognito mode in mac enter the shortcut key below:
Press ⌘ + Shift + n. (For Chrome)
Press ⌘ + Shift + P (For Firefox)
