Electric Vehicle Charging: What You Need to Know

Electric vehicle charging is a critical component of the development of electric vehicles. It allows people to use electric cars and plug-in hybrids conveniently at home and on the go. A few different chargers exist, but many more are being developed.

Electric vehicle charging devices are classified by type and technology and have evolved to offer better performance, safety, convenience, efficiency, cost, and longevity. If you’re looking to purchase an EV or change your current charger, you must know which type of charger you need for your vehicle.

Electric Vehicle Charging

The charging process for electric vehicles (EVs) involves using a charger that plugs into an outlet and converts the vehicle’s DC battery system into usable AC or household electrical power. The electric car charging process is entirely different from the process of plugging in your appliance at home. You will need a suitable charger to plug into your vehicle to use this charging method. The charge rate will differ depending on the type of charger, but some typical rates are 120V/240V/480V.

Some chargers used by the public are rated with energy recovery capabilities (ER), which allow them to recover energy during periods of low power usage and have a separate socket for this purpose. The amount of time it takes for the battery to fully charge depends on the size of the battery and the type of charger. This process typically takes about four hours if you use a standard household outlet and may take more than twenty-four hours if you charge with a standard outlet.

Types of Electric Car Chargers

1. On-board Electric Car Charger

This charger is integrated into the vehicle and is automatically available for use. It’s plugged directly into the car’s power supply, which allows it to be used and moved quickly. Onboard chargers have an inbuilt battery management system (BMS) that manages the charging process and all factors that could affect the safety and durability of your battery. Unlike some other types of electric car chargers, this type has very few risks and requirements, such as no firewall or modification of the electrical system. Some newer electric cars have built-in charging ports for quick charging.

2. Portable Electric Car Charger

This charger is either bricks-and-mortar or portable and is moved from one location to another. They are often used as part of public charging facilities where multiple vehicles must be set. These chargers may provide less power than other types available, and many have a maximum charge rate-limiting the amount of energy they can output. Most portable chargers have an inbuilt battery management system, but some on the market do not.

3. On-board Chargers

 

Homes or businesses typically use these chargers because they require no additional equipment or wiring to start using them. They can quickly charge and can be plugged into a standard three-prong or four-prong socket. The downside is that using this charger is only sometimes possible, so it’s essential to understand how it works before you buy. A few different manufacturers produce onboard chargers for different types of vehicles.

4. Public Chargers

They are often used in public places such as department stores, hospitals, airports, restaurants, etc. These chargers are typically placed at convenient public locations, making them ideal for quick charging while you’re out and about.
