Even the employers had to adapt to the new changes with the pandemic

The first wave of the pandemic was quite challenging with people and companies unsure of how they were going to get through. The healthcare system in the country was not sure how to cope with the large number of cases that were coming through, and many people found themselves not getting the help they wanted. To reduce the number of people affected by the pandemic, the UK went through its first national lockdown. Markets, shops and the economy were closed with people advised against moving outdoors. People had to stay home for as long as they could and leave only in case of emergencies or supplies.

While the decision to shut everything down to reduce the number of people travelling came with a lot of consideration and seemed like the only positive one to save people from falling victim to the spreading pandemic, it came at a price. It would not be easy for the economy to recover, and companies and businesses found themselves letting go of a lot of their staff since they were not making enough to keep them.

The Government, to stop the large-scale unemployment taking place in the UK, worked on their furlough scheme where they were paying companies and businesses 80% of the salaries of their employees, with the company only paying the difference. The scheme worked well in the beginning but did not last very long with companies still letting go of employees in large numbers.

Additionally, they made some changes to the way that companies worked and functioned, which was not the same now as it used to be pre-pandemic. Remote working was turning into the norm since people were not leaving their homes unless they had to. Additionally, companies and offices were not allowed to meet the same numbers of employees as they did in the past since they had to work on the social distancing rules, which meant that they could only meet 50% of their numbers. While remote working decreased productivity to a small extent, it was the best way to move forward since there were bare.

Much like employees who were adapting to these changes, employers in most cases had to adapt as well. The few of them who were against remote working or working with the new normal had to shut shop and wait for everything to open up properly. In some of the cases, they had not met a large number of people they were working with in person. Most of the meetings, whether internal or with clients, took place online, which was another process not followed in the past.

With all these new changes, companies began working on background checks for all their employees. In the past, they conducted these checks at random, but now they were being followed across the board. The most popular test was the DBS check since it provided all the information that someone could need, without having to go through multiple forms and allowed the viewing of the DBS certificate online. Additionally, companies looking for basic information could go with CRB check since all job descriptions did not need a detailed background check.
