Huawei Watch GT2: Test – everything about release, apps, battery

Huawei says goodbye to Wear OS: The Huawei Watch GT smartwatch uses its own operating system. This solves problems of the predecessor and raises new ones.

SATISFACTORY

Huawei uses its own operating system for the Watch GT instead of Wear OS. This has advantages and disadvantages: The purged system enables a long battery life and easier operation and control as well as clear training functions. With its own system, however, Huawei cuts the connection to many Google functions: There is no music control and no way to reply to messages or install apps. Manufacturers of wearable have to decide: if they want to offer the maximum number of functions, they need a fast processor and there is a loss of battery life. The alternative is a lean, energy-saving system that offers less and runs for a long time. The Huawei Watch GT2 with the manufacturer’s own Lite OS is based on this strategy aclever move? COMPUTER BILD sent the smartwatch to the test.

Huawei Watch GT2: design and display

The Huawei Watch GT comes in two versions, the Classic Edition (silver with a brown-black leather-silicone strap) and the Sport Edition (black with a black silicone strap). Good: 22-millimeter standard bracelets fit on the watch, so that buyers do not have to rely on the included strap.

The 1.39 inch screen has a resolution of 454×454 pixels. Thanks to AMOLED technology, it is as bright as it is energy-saving. All content can be read easily – even in strong sunlight. While the display and the stainless steel bezel are very scratch-resistant, the plastic back of the case is sensitive.

Huawei Watch GT2: operating system, features

The clock is equipped with a tiny memory of 128 megabytes. There is no space left on the Watch GT to store photos, music or apps – and that is not what we wanted, because the Lite OS operating system does not even have an app store. The watch displays messages, but does not allow replies via smartwatch. The advantage over Wear OS, which was still used in the predecessor Huawei Watch 2, is that it is simpler and clearer: For example, there is only one app (from Huawei) on the watch for recording workouts and not several confusing alternatives (Google Fit, Huawei, others from the Play Store). To pair with the smartphone, users only need one app (Huawei Health) instead of several (Huawei Health, Huawei Wear, Wear OS, and Google Fit). The watch works with mobile phones from iOS 9 and Android 4.4.

Warning: The Huawei Health app causes problems for many Android users (as of June 11, 2020). If you are affected, you have to install the Huawei app store on your smartphone to fix the problem. COMPUTER BILD explains in step-by-step instructions how to solve the Huawei health problem. Before you buy, try out whether the Huawei Health app can be installed on your own mobile phone without any problems.

Huawei Watch GT2: processor, battery

The two cores work with 16 megabytes of memory and therefore offer little performance. The advantage: You work energy-saving and still work smoothly – after all, the watch does not offer any complex functions. The battery has a capacity of 420 mAh and, together with the slim system, delivers an astonishing runtime – with the manufacturer’s settings, the device lasts longer than some fitness trackers, with at least a week.

Huawei Watch GT2: sport, GPS, pulse

The Huawei Watch uses three satellite systems for location: GPS, Glonass and Galileo. In the test, the watch found the signal very quickly, even in the city. The sensor system is only used to record routes during sport; navigation over it is not intended. After all, a compass helps with orientation. The Huawei Watch records running, swimming, walking, climbing and cycling. The waterproof case (5 ATM) is suitable for swimming in the pool. That worked in the test. However, the pulse sensor was very inaccurate in the test; it underestimated the actual heart rate. Things were different with steps and sleep: the step count was correct and the sleep registration worked smoothly.

Huawei Watch GT2: price and availability

Huawei Watch GT2 in the test: battery beast with limits

Two weeks of battery life is a proud announcement, but that’s exactly what Huawei promises with the new Watch GT2. In the test you discover what else it can and also what it cannot with the Huawei Watch GT2, the Chinese are releasing the second generation of their smartwatch, which also relies mainly on a long battery life. However, this will require buyers to forego some features compared to other smartwatches. In fact, the watch may be almost worth it.

Design and craftsmanship are successful

Everything for a quick start is included in the delivery. In addition to the watch and the magnetic charging station, there is a second bracelet and some paper in the small, black packaging. A power supply unit is not included. I recommend a multiple charger anyway.

Everything for a quick start is included in the delivery. In addition to the watch and the magnetic charging station, there is a second bracelet and some paper in the small, black packaging. A power supply unit is not included. I recommend a multiple charger anyway. Personally, I especially like the design a simple, round shape with a silver stainless steel case. Personally, I could have missed the markings on the edge of the glass fitting (total station), but that’s a matter of taste. The sensors are located on the bottom and the two buttons on the side of the case round off the overall “watch” image. Due to the subtle appearance of the Huawei Watch GT 2, the watch can also be combined well with formal clothing.  All transitions are precise and especially the smooth glass feels very nice to use. The leather bracelet still looks good after six weeks.
